How to Choose a Plus Size Sports Bra That Supports You

Choosing a sports bra shouldn’t feel harder than the workout itself! And yet for women who wear plus size sports bras, it often does. Too many options promise “maximum support” but are a maximum pain in the… back. Others technically fit, but only if you keep still and don’t breathe too deeply.

The reality is that support in a plus size sports bra is about the design as much as it is getting the right size. Once you know what actually makes a sports bra work, it becomes much easier to spot the ones worth your time.

Start with what “support” really means

Breasts move in every directions when you’re exercising, and a good sports bra’s job is to minimise that movement without making you feel restricted.

That’s why your everyday bras, even supportive plus size bras, aren’t suitable for workouts. Sports bras are built differently, with stronger underbands, firmer fabrics, and designs that keep breast tissue close to the body so it can’t bounce about and cause tissue damage.

Our plus size sports bras are designed with this kind of control, using clever design features to battle the bounce. Here are a few things to look out for:

  1. The band does the work (always)

If there’s one thing to prioritise when choosing a sports bra, it’s the band. The band is what anchors the bra to your body. If it isn’t firm enough, everything else will just end up compensating.

A supportive band should feel snug and sit level the whole way around your body. It shouldn’t ride up at the back, even when you lift your arms. If it does, the bra will never give you the support it promises, no matter how “high impact” it claims to be.

This is especially important for full busts, where weight distribution plays more of a role. A strong band takes most of that pressure off your shoulders and anchors your boobs in place.

  1. Compression isn’t the enemy

Some women worry that compression sports bras will make them feel squashed or uncomfortable, especially if they’ve only tried generic S–XL styles in the past. The problem there isn’t compression, it’s lack of options.

Compression works best when it’s designed to take into account your body size and your breast size. After all, an XL sports bra might be the ‘right’ size for the woman who wears a 12H, as well as the woman who’s 18C, but how that bra feels will be dramatically different for both.

When the band, cup volume, and fabric strength are balanced properly, compression doesn’t flatten you, it just keeps your boobs stable. Our Sports Bras have compression technology as well as a two-point racer back fastening, so you can even adjust the compression between the top and bottom of your chest. That’s one of the reasons they’re great for running, HIIT, or anything with impact.

Compression not your thing? Want something for lighter movement? Try our wired Active Bras.

  1. Fit matters more than you think

Even the best-designed sports bra won’t support you properly if it doesn’t fit. Most women are settling for plus size sports bras with bands that are too loose or cups that don’t fully contain their breasts, which leads to bounce, bulging, rubbing, or the constant need to readjust.

If your sports bra feels supportive at first but uncomfortable after 20 minutes, or if you notice movement returning as the session goes on, it’s worth checking your size. A properly fitted sports bra should feel secure from your first warm-up to the last stretch.

We offer bands from sports bras in sizes 10-24 and cup size C to J. If you’re unsure, our online bra fittings can help you find the right size without stepping into a fitting room.
