Why Is It So Hard to Find a Plus Size Bra That Fits? (And How to Finally Get It Right)
If you’ve ever walked out of a changing room muttering, “This was a terrible idea”, trust us, you’re in good company. Plus size and fuller-busted women often have the toughest time finding bras that fit, and honestly, it’s not a ‘you’ problem, it’s an industry problem.
Let’s talk about why it’s so frustrating, and more importantly, how to find bras that deserve their spot in your top drawer.
1. The industry isn’t built with your body in mind
Here’s the part no one says out loud. A lot of brands that claim to offer “plus size bras” or “bras for big boobs”... don’t.
You don’t make a great plus size range by taking a smaller pattern and just scaling it up. Bigger bodies don’t just need more fabric, they need underwear (and clothing in general) that is thoughtfully designed to fit and flatter their shape.
How can you tell a good bra for big breasts from one that isn’t? Check the model photos. If the brand is relying on the model’s breast implants, or an “arms in the air” pose to make the bra look good, it’s not worth a second glance.
You’ve seen the ads. The model is casually stretching her arms up, hair perfectly blown out, and you think, “Wow, if it looks good on her, maybe it will look good on me too!” Except it’s not the bra, it’s the pose. The stretch is so that gravity does some of the heavy lifting, which hides the lack of support. No saggy underboob in sight! But in the real world, we’re walking, bending, carrying, not posing prettily for a glamour shot.
So if you’re looking for a bra for plus size girlies, always check the photo.
2. Cup volume matters (and you’ve got more than you think)
Here’s a fun fact nobody taught us as teenagers; your breast tissue isn’t just the front bit. In fact, your breast tissue goes all the way around the side, and even slightly into the underarm area.
You know that awkward bulgy bit that pops over the top of your band? Your bra is meant to hold that side tissue as well as what’s in front. That’s why if you’ve ever been for a bra fitting, they get you to lean forward and jiggle, or “scoop and swoop”.
Whether you’re wearing a plus-size wirefree bra, plus-size sports bra or plus-size T-shirt bra, they’re all designed to contain your full volume within the cup. If yours doesn’t, you’re in the wrong size.
3. Not all plus size women have plus size boobs
There’s a weird industry myth that “plus size = giant bust,” but bodies come in every shape and size. You can be a voluptuous woman with a flat chest, or a teeny wee thing with an ample bosom, and both are normal (and deserve nice bras).
That’s why we offer sizes 10–24 and cups C–K, because plus size isn’t one body shape, and support shouldn’t be one-size-fits-most.
4. How Rose & Thorne bras are different
At Rose & Thorne, our bras are designed with Forgiving Fit technology, which offers a bit more stretch that accommodates your body as it changes over the course of the month.
For G cup and above, our Premium Support bras are engineered with a stronger frame, wider straps, deeper cup, and internal support specifically designed for heavier, fuller busts.
And because we offer such a huge size range, you don’t have to choose between right cup/wrong band, or vice versa; you can always pick up the perfect fit.
5. What to try if you’re always spilling, gaping, or pinching
If you’ve never found a bra that fit well, the chances are high that you’re buying the wrong size. Most women are, and it’s usually a band that’s too big, which then means your cup is too small. If you’re fastening it on the tightest hook and can still pull it a few inches away from your body, or it rides up your back (your band should sit straight and level from front to back), you need to be refit.
If your cups gape, overflow, or pinch, you may need a cup size tweak, a different shape, or (most likely) a better band-to-cup ratio.
The easiest solution is to get fitted by someone who understands plus size and fuller bust bodies, like our wonderful bra gurus. We offer online bra fittings from the comfort of home, so you can avoid those awkward changing rooms and get an accurate fitting without having to strip half naked.
